Really love this new single from Eels. It sounds like something off electro-shock blues, I much prefer the band when they’re doing the slow sad music. Looking forward to hearing End Times. Also the cover is by my favourite illustrator Mr. Adrian Tomine!

Right finally a bit of spare time to do some blogging. Finally done with the weather project now, had the crit on friday and was very pleased with the final outcome. I got some friends to provide different handwriting for my letters and spent a lot of time on the detail. It was really satisfying doing them and I definitely plan on making this an ongoing project. The one thing I felt let me down in the cirt was my presentation, but it was all a bit rushed. Overall though it was a great way to end my first term!

(I plan to take some better photo’s off them soon and am thinking about setting up a blog where you can post your own letters to the weatherman)

This was a quick poster i made at a stage before I got to the idea of letters. I was originally planning on doing it as a poster piece with the image of the person then a quick typographic, ed ruscha style snapshot of how they were effected by the weather. but it didn’t really make much sense and as visually pleasing as it is, I feel it’s a bit bland and obvious, whereas the letters have a much nicer and more human feel.

Another thing that kind of informed my idea and inspired me was Sophie Calle’s exhibition at the whitechapel gallery. I’d never really been that aware of her work before being taken there by my girlfriend this weekend but the exhibition was really amazing. It’s entitled talking to strangers and involves her taking an email her ex wrote her and getting lots of different professional women to interpret it in different ways. There’s a really wide range of people (and a parrot) who have given their interpretations. It made me think about how one thing or event can be interpreted so differently by different people and that is what I’m aiming to get across with my letters.

I kind of hit a high yesterday with this weather project and have come up with an Idea I’m really pleased with. I was thinking about the way in which we relate with weather forecasts and how often you find yourself blaming the weatherman. I started to wonder if the weatherman ever gets any threatening or complaining letters if he reports the weather wrong and ecided even if he doesn’t that would be a really lovely concept to go with. As research I’ve been looking through mysterious letters which i have posted about here before. I’m planning to try and get into the characters of certain people who’s day’s have been ruined by the weather and get across their characteristics by using papers and envelopes and handwriting. I’ve got a task ahead of me getting lots of these letter’s prepared by friday but it’s a challenge I look forward too!

So I’ve been doing loads of research and thinking about ideas for this weather project but today I thought I’d actually get down to do some practical tests. First off I thought I’d play with the idea of making some simple really dark stormy typographic posters based on the godspeed you! black emperor track. Luckily it was a horrible day so I took some pictures from the studio window and got working. It’s a very simple Idea but overall I feel visually it works quite nicely. The typeface could do with some more consideration, Futura is a bit obvious, but still I’m reasonably pleased with the outcome.

Last week we got set a live project to raise awareness and money in aid of world aids day and the terrence higgins trust. Our group decided to create a paper chain throughout the day. As preperation we had loads of figures cut out and on the day as people showed interest and donated we let them customize they’re own figures and add them to the chain. We had such a fun day and raised around £460 for the THT. Had a lovely day today visiting galleries with my girlfriend and probably my favourite place we visited was the Kemistry gallery, a brilliant little exhibition space dedicated to graphic design. The show they have on at the moment is by the Parisian Illustrator Genevieve Gauckler. What I love about her work is that going in I was expecting most of it to be digitally printed or screen printed, but was pleasantly surprised to find a large majority of it hand painted. The pain did add some really nice textures to her simple minimalistic style. Overall a very fun little exhibition thats well worth checking out. It’s only open for another couple of weeks but if you’re in London I implore you to check it out if you haven’t already.

I’ve also been looking at lighthouses. There’s something really romantic and sad about them. I also find their reationship with the weather quite interesting. They’re like a noble figure standing at the shore holding out their hand of light guide you safely home.

THE SKYLINE WAS BEAUTIFUL ON FIRE

THE CARS ARE ON FIRE AND THERE’S NO DRIVER AT THE WHEEL

thinking about weather and music I found myself wanting to explore the really dark end. The music of Godspeed You! Black Emperor is something that I find especially moving. I quite like the idea of playing with the first movement of the dead flag blues and using the spoken word intro as a basis to create some really dark atmospheric posters.

Washed Out - Feel It All Around

I’m kind of overrun with ideas for this weather project I don’t really know what direction to take it in. I feel like I’m getting a bit to caught up in thinking about the seasons. I’d quite like to create some kind of interactive piece based around music that fits certain types of weather. Like for example Thing’s We Lost In The Fire by Low always makes me thing of rain and storms whereas an artist like Washed Out (who I’ve been getting quite into lately) almost feels so sunny it hurts.
