Me and Luke Pearson are holding a comic workshop with Nobrow at the V&A in London tomorrow on Friday 24th at 6pm. Come along if you’re in the area and have a draw!
I painted up this sign to lure people in.

I gots a new blog! I’ve kind of decided to move all my design work related stuff over there. Tumblr really isn’t the best place for that kind of stuff. This blog will still be very active though, I’ll be using it to post non-work related stuff, so really it’ll be a lot more fun! There have been quite a few likes on my work related posts though so if you enjoy reading them feel free to pop on over and follow me and blogger where my adress is cedarnouns.blogspot.com
Wes Anderson accepts an award for Fantastic Mr. Fox in Stop Motion! How fantastic.
Still on the subject of interesting comic layouts. I couldn’t not include Paul Hornscemeir’s The Tree Paradoxes. The book is a must have for any comic book fans not only because it’s beautifully and imaginatively presented but because the story is a proper work of literary goodness. That’s for another post though, It’s the really lovely layout of the title page that is of interest to me right now. I adore it! The way it’s presented as a crop from a page of a comic book is really effective and it instantly lets you know that you’re not in for your average comic book presentation, the whole book is presented in many different comic styles with unfinished pencil sketches, halftone colouring, solid colouring and a section presented like an old used comic book. This is definitely an idea that I would like to explore with my double page spreads. Drawing out a whole comic would be way to time consuming but producing something similar to this would be easier and probably just as effective.
I’ve mentioned this book quite a bit on this blog. It was one of my best purchases of last year. I just came across it again while doing my layout research. The cover of the book is a perfect example of extremely well considered design. It’s so hard to pull off the perfect blend of busyness and minimalism that they’ve managed to capture. There’s uite a few different typefaces and overall the whole thing should be a mess but some how they’ve managed to reign it in and make it something that works exquisitely well, I think it’s the colour scheme that does it (and obviously a very talented designer)
